Quote and Confession

"A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron."
-- Horace Mann

Today is only the first official day of 2nd semester and...um, I'm the teacher in the above quote.

I told my dh last week that I didn't like teaching. I enjoy reading aloud to my kids, I enjoy taking them places like the zoo, I enjoy playing with them in the backyard, I enjoy learning myself and watching them learn things themselves.

But I don't enjoy being the teacher and sitting at the table while then read the instructions aloud and fill out the worksheet, I don't like checking and rechecking math, I don't like saying "Is your schoolwork done?"

And that is my confession for the day.

I am afraid to confess on my blog. My family reads it and, well, don't know if I can handle that!

I like working with them, but mine don't like to do hands on things very well. They just want school to be done so they can go play! ARGH -- what about that instilling a love of learning that I'm supposed to be doing. Sigh -- what do you do?

Yesterday was our 1st day back to school. Holly had a hard day that day. Today she did wonderful! Today was Timmy's hard day. Man I don't know if I can handle each child having a hard day this week. Keeping fingers crossed that it ends today. :o) XXXX

I hammer on cold iron every day. Guess I better get busy with my list of confessions!

Umm...that thing that my 7yo is working on is a Roman Sundial archeology kit.

But wait, Tina & Lisa, you're talking about the blue and white tray underneath? My sil gave it to me last Christmas, saying she loved & used hers all the time. I think she got it while in Germany.

Here is another confession: I think this is the first time I've actually used it for anything! So what DO you do w/ polish pottery??

Gasp! Oh Lee... Polish Pottery is just.. the most... pertiest.... most wonderfulest bake/dinner ware I have ever had!

Its unique and versatile. Very expensive....but I have been grateful to find pieces at TJMaxx for very good prices, and a dear friend and mother in law who send me some every Christmas!

You can use it for anything…… even for what you used it for! Lol It’s made in Poland. Look on the back and see what it says… it should have a stamp. I can’t see the entire piece in your picture… Its common in the UK, Germany, Poland…. I love the stuff!

Like I was saying… its expensive… the piece your son is using (sorry about the hand confusion) is probably worth new in a store between $45.00-$65.00.

Dear Lee,

I think the trick is to get through the things that you need to do with the kids like the worksheets or the record-keeping and then share with them what you are passionate about. For me it is art and music and nature study and for you it could be something totally different. I have a friend that hates art but loves science so she is passionate about that.

It is like any other "job" that you can have. (you know the kind you get paid for doing) Some days are good, some tasks are more interesting but there are things about the job that you truly love and those that you really hate. Dwell on the subjects that you are passionate about and I think that is where you will feel the most at home and your children will feel the excitement. I don't know anyone who is truly in love with the menial day to day of homeschooling, you are not alone.

Chin up, this is a hard time of year for everyone to get back into the daily routine. We had some frustration this week too already...it's not the homeschooling or the teacher, just the way it goes.

Ditto to everything Lisa said. :o)

The stuff is very tough/strong. You can bake with it, put it in the microwave, put it in the dishwasher. I LOVE the stuff. I think I have that piece too. :o)

You can make brownies with it, make casseroles in it, and use it to serve dinner in to make the table look lovely. All pieces have that light cream base color, but the designs vary.

Oh and I can't believe it. An actual piece "FROM GERMANY" and that is how you use it for the very first time... BAHHHHH... What is the world coming too? :o) *wink*

Want to know "one" of my dreams? To fly to German and purchase Polish Pottery directly from their.

Have a wonderful Wednesday. Oh that reminds me… Wordless Wednesday is today. Better find a picture. :o)

Lee.. you are a funny gal! Yes that is Polish Pottery on my hutch! I have more behind the doors! I love the stuff! I find it cheap at TJMAXX or I wouldn’t buy it at all. Its too spendy and I can’t afford full price.

It really is pretty...

as for the project... lets get to it so we can see! Finish woman! Finish!! *Ü*

Love ya!
