Poems for the broken hearted

I came across some Psalms and poems I had copied during a time of great grief years ago. I'm putting my 3 favorite here.  Maybe you know someone who needs to hear one today.

My life is but a weaving
Between the Lord and me
I do not choose the colors
He worketh steadily.

Oftimes he weaveth sorrow
And I in foolish pride
Forget he sees the upper
And I the underside.

Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.

- Author Unknown

I walked a mile with Pleasure,
She chattered all the way;
But left me none the wiser,
For all she had to say.
I walked a mile with Sorrow
And ne'er a word said she;
But, oh, the things I learned from her
When Sorrow walked with me!

-- Robert Browning Hamilton

A Confederate Soldier's Prayer
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for but got everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all people, most richly blessed.

{{Lee}} I've been thinking about you! :)

One can learn a lot from the wisdom in the last one you shared. Thanks for posting all of them.

Lee,

Those are so beautiful. There is so much bad theology floating around these days that says that God desires for all believers to be, "healthy, wealthy and wise". The truth is so much sweeter - that God can use all circumstances to grown us into the image of His Son and that through heartbreak sometimes we have the sweetest communion with Him.

Thanks for sharing those poems. I am copying them into my journal because I know one day I will certainly need the encouragement they offer.

Thinking of you,
Jennefer
